SAXE Squash Club
2017/18 Season
The New Canaan Saxe Middle School 5th and 6th grade Junior Squash clinics at Squash Alley are aimed at beginner and intermediate level players. The program is co-ed and is designed to be the entry point for (New Canaan) Saxe Middle School squash team development plans, leading to the 7th and 8th grade competitive teams, and ultimately to the New Canaan High School competitive teams. We are striving to make our Junior squash program challenging and fun, to work with each child, and to develop strong and competitive squash players for life.
Our goal is to encourage each player to reach his or her potential in squash through instruction and to be prepared to compete in the game of squash while fostering an environment of teamwork, camaraderie and sportsmanship.
In conjunction with New Canaan Squash’s overall goals: The 5/6th grade Fall pre-season will mainly provide for a dynamic, professional development with the aim to accommodate those children who are new and interested in learning squash, as well as those who are returning Saxe players, and those wishing to further honing skills with other New Canaan’s squash program participants. Players will be well prepared for the Winter Season.
The 5th/6th grade Winter Season (end of November to March) will be a continuation of this Fall session. We will be adding and accommodating players that want to try some competitive experiences by participating in local tournaments and a friendly match or two. By the end of 6th grade, players will be well prepared to try out for the Saxe 7th and 8th grade teams.
The players will be assessed by ability and experience, and coached accordingly. The Program’s fundamentals will include:
For new players:
+ Learning and improving on grip, swing, racket technique and skills
+ Efficient movement and positioning
+ Stroke strengthening/effectiveness, general conditioning specific to squash movements
+ Informal match play to learn strategy and rules
+ Keeping the clinics fun and exciting while developing teamwork, camaraderie and sportsmanship
For experienced players:
+ Initial check of grip and swing
+ Improving on racquet technique and skills
+ Efficient movement and positioning
+ Develop and execute game strategy
+ Rules, objectives, and following squash’s prevailing sportsmanship and etiquette
+ Participate in optional matches
